My Journey in the First Nations Housing Professionals Association Program

After more than 15 years since my last academic experience, I’ve made the decision to return to school, enrolling part-time in the First Nations Housing Professionals Association (FNHP) Program. It’s a significant step for me personally and professionally, as this marks my first time back in a classroom (albeit virtual) since graduating from my undergraduate degree in 2008. Why, after all this time, would I dive back into academic life? The answer is simple: a deep commitment to making a difference!

At Arcwell Developments, we’ve long worked to support and service First Nation communities, focusing on creating sustainable, efficient, and respectful housing solutions. However, the complexity of housing challenges within First Nations and Indigenous communities requires not just practical experience but also specialized knowledge. That’s where this program comes in.

The FNHP Program offers a comprehensive, in-depth approach to First Nations housing management, covering crucial areas such as housing programs, infrastructure, strategic planning, policy development, and professional ethics. These are the tools that will help elevate the work we do at Arcwell Developments. I’m excited to gain this new skill set, which will allow us to approach housing projects in a more holistic, culturally aware, and community-driven way.

Why First Nations Housing Matters:

For many First Nations and Indigenous communities, housing is more than just shelter; it’s a reflection of identity, culture, and self-determination. Unfortunately, housing in these communities is often fraught with challenges ranging from overcrowding and substandard conditions to lack of funding and infrastructure. ongoing systemic barriers have created a unique set of hurdles that demand equally unique solutions.

One of the reasons I was drawn to the FNHP Program is its focus on these specific issues. It recognizes that housing solutions for First Nations must be community-driven and grounded in the traditions, cultures, and needs of the people. It’s not just about building houses; it’s about creating homes that foster safety, dignity, and opportunity. This approach aligns perfectly with our values at Arcwell Developments, where we strive to deliver housing solutions that not only meet the immediate needs of the community but also contribute to long-term sustainability and growth.

A Learning Journey for Greater Impact:

Returning to school after such a long break is both exciting and a little daunting. The world of academia has changed in so many ways since I last attended classes. With online learning now at the forefront, it’s a different experience, but one that offers flexibility, especially as a part-time student balancing professional and personal commitments.

More importantly, I know that the insights and knowledge I’ll gain through this program will have a direct impact on the work we do at Arcwell Developments. From developing new housing strategies to understanding the intricacies of housing policy, I’m confident that this education will empower me to better serve First Nation communities, helping us deliver solutions that are both practical and culturally relevant.

I encourage other First Nations housing professionals or those interested in Indigenous housing to consider pursuing this certification. It’s an opportunity to deepen your expertise, enhance your ability to drive meaningful change, and contribute to the creation of sustainable housing solutions that respect and uplift our communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the future of housing in First Nations and Indigenous communities.

Stay tuned for more updates on my learning journey and how we plan to integrate these new insights into our work at Arcwell Developments!
